About the Artist

Georgina Gratrix is a Cape Town-based painter celebrated for her exuberant, boldly coloured figurative paintings. Her work — featuring domestic interiors, food, flowers, and figures rendered in vivid, almost hyper-saturated hues — is joyful, sensuous, and formally confident. Gratrix has attracted considerable international attention and her paintings are held in significant private and institutional collections. Her Ampersand Fellowship residency in New York in 2018 was a productive period of new work and dialogue, cementing relationships with an international network of artists, curators, and collectors.

The Ampersand Fellowship

Since 1997, the Ampersand Foundation has sent more than 300 South African visual artists to a funded residency in Tribeca, New York — connecting them with one of the world's most dynamic art ecosystems.
