Stephen Hobbs

Sculptor & Installation Artist
About the Artist

Stephen Hobbs is a Johannesburg-based artist and co-director of The Trinity Session, an organisation committed to the development of public and site-responsive art in South Africa. His practice draws deeply on the urban fabric of Johannesburg — its architecture, infrastructure, signage, and layered histories of planning and displacement. Working through sculpture, installation, and curatorial projects, Hobbs investigates how cities produce meaning, shape identity, and encode power. His New York residency exposed him to one of the world's great urban laboratories at a pivotal moment in his career.

The Ampersand Fellowship

Since 1997, the Ampersand Foundation has sent more than 300 South African visual artists to a funded residency in Tribeca, New York — connecting them with one of the world's most dynamic art ecosystems.
